The GOAL Foundation, Inc., is a non-profit 501 c (3)
organization founded in 2005 as a response to the
continued deficiencies in access to basic healthcare
facilities and medicines in developing countries.
Although a lot of work has been done by various non-governmental
and governmental agencies, there are still great needs
to be met. The GOAL seeks to assist disadvantaged
people who do not have means or a voice. In the less
common cases where people have modest means, the available
facilities are grossly inadequate to diagnose or treat
their illness leading to high death rates for easily
curable illnesses.
The organization was founded by K. Lara Adejumo M.D,
a Family Medicine physician in Texas. Public health
issues and poverty have been a concern of hers since
her medical training at Boston University School of
Medicine, Massachusetts. Her interest in charitable
work began almost a decade ago when she began a series
of four internships with the American Cancer Society
that involved projects that benefited cancer patients
and survivors. She was further inspired by the difficult
journey of a family member, Ganiyu Olubunmi Alaka
for whom the organization is named, who received treatment
for childhood leukemia in Africa and later passed
away from cancer.
